O'Neil auditioned for Season 3 of Canadian Idol in the early stages of 2005 when she was still in high school. She made it into the top 100 rounds since the judges were impressed at her singing performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the judges. But, O'Neil suffered a significant drop during her Top 10 as well as the Top 9 final weeks when she received votes for the top 3, and second lowest. The judges were surprised at her performance and advised viewers to choose those who sing well, such as Melissa. In spite of consistently impressive performances throughout the contest, O'Neil never again finished within the top three. With two other stunning performance on September 7 2005, the day that O'Neil as well as Rex Goudie made it to the final two contestants, the judge Werner said that newspaper headlines will read: O'Neil defeated Goudie to win the title of third Canadian Idol, the first female winner and the youngest winner of the show's history . O'Neil got a phone call from Canadian prime minister Paul Martin to congratulate her on winning Canadian Idol.
